God*s Sacrifice For You

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

The Spanish Civil War took place between 1936 and 1939. For 72 days the communists bombarded a fort in Toledo, Spain. They captured the son of the general in charge of the fort. They told him that if he did not surrender the fort they would kill his son. In order to prove they had captured his son they put him on the telephone.

The son said: *They tell me, Father, that unless you surrender the fort they will kill me.* There was prolonged silence on the father*s end of the line as he wrestled with himself. Should he sacrifice his country*s interests because of his deep love for his son? At last came the anguished words: *My son, commend your soul to God, Cri Viva la Espana (Long live Spain) and die like a patriot. Good-by, my son.* *Good-by Father.*

The general then went into the back part of the fort and knelt in prayer. As the tears streamed down between his fingers he heard the shot at the bottom of the hill that took his son*s life. For his country this patriotic general made the terrible sacrifice of giving up his son.

John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
